My Name Is Bond… James Bond

What do Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan have in common? All of them have played the most coveted role of Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007. Unfortunately, they have now hanged their sleeves and made way for the new James Bond: Daniel Craig.

Born in Chester, England, Daniel Craig was the son of Olivia and Timothy John. His mother is an art teacher while his father was a former midshipman in the Merchant Navy and took several jobs after landing on shore. While attending high school at Hilbre High School as well as Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby, Daniel Craig played rugby for the Hoylake Rugby Club. Afterwards, he transferred to London to take part at the National Youth Theatre after shortly staying at Calday.

Movie Career

After making his big screen debut as Alex West in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001, Daniel Craig’s next assignment was Road to Perdition alongside Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. In the movie, he played the role of Connor Rooney, the son of an Irish mob boss, portrayed by Paul Newman.

In October 2005, Daniel Craig agreed to become the fifth James Bond by signing a five-film contract with EON Productions. After accepting the challenge of playing the spy, Craig’s objective is to bring more emotional depth to the role. After a year, his first James Bond movie, Casino Royale, hit the theaters.

Today, Daniel Craig is considered as the highest paid British actor. His other movie credits include the Golden Compass, Munich, Sylvia, A Kid in King Arthur’s Court, among others.

Casino Royale

This is the movie that started it all. James Bond goes on his first mission as a Double O agent. In his first mission after being recently promoted as a double 0 agent, James Bond competes in a high-stakes poker game initiated by Le Chiffre as part of his aim of recovering huge amount of his clients’ money that he lost in a failed plot which Bond quashed.

The movie starts with James Bond designated to monitor a terrorist based in Uganda. However, the mission goes array and Bond decides to investigate which leads him to the terrorist network of Le Chiffre. The work of his organization would come to an end if Bond would beat him in a poker game.

Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace, the 22nd Bond film, picks up where Casino Royale left off. This time James Bond sets off to Italy in order to ruin the plans of Dominic Green, who is aiming to launch a coup d’etat in Bolivia and take control of its water supply.

If the theme of Casino Royale focused on terrorism, the aim of Quantum of Solace, on the other hand, is environmentalism.

After the movie, Daniel Craig gets good reviews as the best James Bond after Sean Connery.

Quantum on Video

Daniel Craig lends his face and character in Quantum of Solace The Video Game. Intended for users of PS3 and Xbox 360, this video game harnesses the high definition graphics capability of both systems in order to produce the best James Bond game in history.

James Bond is an all-time hero for those who are in love with action flicks. He was fictional character that was created by Ian Fleming that was launch in novels, television shows, and films.

In this article, we lay out the complete list of James Bond movies from the very first one that graced the big screen in 1962. Scan the list and see which ones you have missed. If you ever find a title you missed watching, rush to your nearest video store and grab a copy. Missing any of the James Bond flicks is a mortal sin for Bond aficionados.

7. Diamonds Are Forever, 1971, Sean Connery

8. Live and Let Die, 1973, Roger Moore

9. The Man with the Golden Gun, 1974, Roger Moore

21. Casino Royale, 2006, Daniel Craig

22. Quantum of Solace, 2008, Daniel Craig

After rounding up the complete list of James Bond movies, we give you some interesting tidbits here and there. Such trivia make the films memorable and truly remarkable.

* The James Bond themes are as memorable as the actors that represented the action hero in those 22 films. It was John Barry Orchestra who orchestrated the earlier themes, which was reinvented and remixed several ways through the years. The other popular tunes that surely bring back memories of Bond films include songs like Nobody Does it Better, which was used in The Spy who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only, which was used in the Bond film of the same title.

* James Bond not only invaded the books, the television, and the big screen, it also made waves in video games and comic books. Several versions of James Bond video games were introduced through the years as well as comic strips that serve as a pricey collection for Bond fans.

* James Bond has two great passions aside from solving crimes and saving the world: girls and gadgets. In every Bond film, viewers note the gadgets and the girls and talk about them endlessly as the fever dies down until another flick is on the pipeline.

MEDICINE MAN

In their scientific research for a cancer cure, Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco have a great scene for using prediction when they are trekking through the Amazon with a native Indian guide. One of them gets “high” from a locally-produced medicine from the bark of the Yocco tree. The ensuing scene is simply hilarious.

The following scene, when they suddenly face a “danger” together, is also a good one. You’ll love the dialogue line, “Go ahead, cry all you want.”

Using Popular Films to Improve Speaking Skills

During the course of my 15 plus years of English as a foreign language teaching, I have come across a number of popular films which not only aid EFL learners in improving their English language speaking skills, but are enjoyable for them to watch. In each of these films a scene is selected and the dialogue and setting are exploited for cultural, linguistic and connected speech elements. While there actually many such films, IÂ’ll mention five of my English language learnersÂ’ favorites in this series of articles.

Plot Outline

In the film, “Medicine Man”, two scientists are looking to find a natural medicine cure for cancer. When they think that they might have found one, the source of it is suddenly destroyed. Not only do they have to find the suspected source again, but also prove that it really works. In the meanwhile the local Indian groups are distrustful because the rain forests are systematically being destroyed by development in the name of progress. They are losing their homes.

Discussion Points, Questions and Activities

Are there jungles or rain forests nearby to your EFL learners? WhatÂ’s the difference between the two? What kind of wildlife and flora are common in your area? What is cancer? How does a doctor diagnose cancer? What are the treatments for it in your area or country? Are these treatments effective? Why or why not? Talk about natural remedies and medicines in your area. Have you or your learners ever tried any of them? Did they work? Is there a commercial form of these natural medicines available? What are they? How much do they cost? Do they work better than natural remedies?

Have your learners practice and act out the scene in pairs or small groups. Write in changes to the scene dialogue. Add dialogue to the scene as well. Update the dialogue into more modern or colloquial English language. May the dialogue funnier, more serious or use idioms and expressions common to the area where the EFL learners live.

Create vocabulary lists, puzzles like crosswords or word searches from the key vocabulary in the scene. The extent of possibilities are limited only by the imagination of you and your English or foreign language learners. Above all, have fun!

Key Film Elements

While many popular films contain selected scenes which could be used to illustrate cultural, linguistic and connected speech elements, these five have proven to be useful and well-received by a variety of English language learner profiles. If you can get a hold of any or all of them, give them a try and watch your learnersÂ’ motivation and English language speaking skills skyrocket.

By the way, let me know how well this works for you. If you have any questions or would like one of the worksheets I use to accompany the film scenes, just drop me a quick e-mail request. IÂ’m always happy to help.

For anyone who watched the 1980′s sit com, Bosom Buddies, it should have been obvious that Tom Hanks, who played Kip Wilson, was destined to become famous. Actually, famous would be an understatement. The Bosom Buddies show was short lived and only ran for two years. Hanks played an advertising man who lived with his friend Henry in an all women’s hotel/boarding house.

The show itself might not have had that much to be funny about except for the fact that men were not allowed to live in the boarding house. It was for women only, so Kip and Henry had to make some major adjustments to themselves. Being men at work and women at home made for some hilarious episodes. It was a little far fetched, but funny none the less.

We are fortunate today to have the privilege of being able to enjoy the work of many actors who seem to have the abilities of a chameleon. Actors like Michael Caine, Sean Connery, and actresses like Meryle Streep, Glenn Close, or Shirley McClain, just to name a few, are able to reinvent themselves for any role they are given to play. It would seem that Tom Hanks is among these chameleons.

Some of the first movies that he played in were relatively successful in the theatre, but did better on video. Movies like One Red Shoe, The Money Pit and Nothing in Common, were not tremendous box office hits, but were eventually watched more after Hanks had achieved some bigger successes.

It was soon enough after these movies, that Hanks had become popular enough to carry some really good movies on to becoming box office smashes. Apollo 13, directed by Ron Howard was based on a historic event and was great.

Sleepless in Seattle was a romantic love story where Hanks played opposite of Meg Ryan. In the movie Philadelphia, he played a homosexual male who was stricken with aids. It was a story to be remembered. These are some of the movies that would show that Hanks was not just another funny guy.

In 1994, Hanks proved that he could really stretch his acting capabilities when he starred with Sally Field in Forrest Gump. Here he played a mentally challenged man who was put in incredible situations and supposedly places that were historic events.

It would make you laugh and then cry. It was so real and yet many times ridiculous, but the film was so good, you simply wanted to believe every word, and at the end you just wished it was not over.

Other great Tom Hank’s films include Castaway, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story 1 and 2 which only highlight his voice, but are memorable performances just the same.
